Each year thousands flock to Rila Monastery in Bulgaria to pray for cure, to light a candle for health, to help them with infertility or simply to see and make a donation to the monastery. According to the popular belief the monastery "St. Ivan Rilski" helps mostly the childless and infirm. Such is one of the legends I was told during one of my visits there.
Great sadness weighed on a peasant from the region of Samokov, who came to pray for his child. His son was three years old but still couldn.t walk. Neither doctors nor the various medications and massages could help him get on his feet.
The father was so desperate that he consideredif it wouldn.t be better for the child to leave this world and not to pull the life.s weight. Then he was told by a friend about the Rila Monastery and the saint whose relics healed the lame, and on the eve of Easter he went there with the child and his wife. The boy was put near the relics of the saint and the end of the liturgy, everybody expected him to get up, but¡¦ nothing happened. The mother wept in grief and the father was despondent. But then the child grabbed the tablecloth over the relics and started trying to get up. And on the third attempt the miracle happened. The father was so grateful to the saint of Rila monastery that he made a great gift on the same day.
Following the example of Svetlyo Kantardjiev, I decided to make a monetary donation to the temple where the saint lived that is situated in a cave,. A friend of mine even joined the campaign for the "Kyustendil Room" exposition by donating authentic household items along the lines of the generous Violeta Georgieva. The clerks from the monastery humbly thanked and said the few I give for them and God means a lot.
